Thank You, Mr. President

There may be no American presidency in my lifetime more polarizing than that of the Oval Office’s current resident, Donald J. Trump. Similarly, no sitting president has ever demanded so much of his people, or challenged or demeaned their most hallowed institutions, to the extent he has. That’s why, like it or not, even for those who remain patently dumbstruck by some of the crude and hateful things our sitting president continues to say and do, we will likely all owe Mr. Trump a huge debt of thanks at some point in the not too distant future.

Custom Drive Shafts Compensate for Distance and Misalignment

Spring-loaded drive shafts consist of two back-to-back single universal joints connected with a spring-loaded intermediate shaft. It allows the drive shaft to be quickly removed and replaced without tools. Pinning of outer yokes is not required because the spring tension on the intermediate shafts holds the quick-change universal joint secure at each end.
 

Fail-Safe Stop Solution

Spring-loaded drive shafts can be customized to include a fail-safe solution. If the application seriously exceeds the joint's rated torque capacity, the drive shaft can be designed to fail and stop in a safe fashion, without damaging the motor.

Broadview, IL, USA, March 19, 2018 - Belden Universal, a leading global manufacturer of custom universal joints and highly specialized mechanical power transmission products, announces today that it has recently implemented critical design upgrades to its universal joints for pick and place (Delta) robots. The redesign project was necessitated by industry demand (from both OEMs and end users) for space-saving components supporting heavier payloads.

The stainless-steel component is based on Belden's unique hybrid design, combining the higher torque capacity of a pin + block joint with the needle bearing's ability to continuously operate at high speeds with low friction. It mitigates corrosion issues, contamination, burnout, and joint seizure.

The redesign project concentrated on the joint's center section. It utilizes stronger, precision needle-roller bearings with larger outside diameters, making it capable of supporting applications with larger payloads and higher torque requirements. Torsional backlash was minimized according to stringent specifications. Modifications to the yoke's ear profile resulted in a higher, 55° angle, further supporting precise positioning and orientation of the robotic arms. With an overall length of just 48mm, the new universal joint delivers a compact, space-saving design at high strength, speed and flexibility.
