Belden’s Needle Bearing Universal Joints fit the mechanical linkage needs of multiple applications, including those in the textile industry. Needle bearing universal joints are sealed and lubricated cross & bearing type joints with rigid axial stiffness for push & pull loads. This design is ideal for handling the rotation and axial load of yarn at the end of a spindle. In addition, Belden’s pin and block style universal joints are well suited for high heat applications - e.g. where a joint is used right next to a hot polymer pump. These Belden Universal Joints are packed with high temperature lubricant to enhance operating life.

For the racing industry, Belden has developed steering and shift linkage solutions focused on cross and needle bearing design. Needle bearing universal joints are preferred for race car applications because they deliver rigid axial stiffness for push/pull loads and feature high-strength alloy steel yokes with permanently sealed drawn cup needle bearings and a forged cross. Steering and shift linkage solutions for race cars are available in a variety of hub materials including: stainless steel, forged steel, extruded aluminum and alloy—with or with out plating.

For light-duty and recreational vehicles, Belden custom manufactures steering assemblies based on the type of vehicle and the manufacturer’s strict guidelines. We carry standard drilling-slip spindle and drill-and-tap assemblies (short and long sleeve) in a variety of diameters. Spindles and drive shafts are available for Belden Machine, NATCO,  Deka Drills. When calculating the operating torque, it must also be compared to the ultimate breaking torque as it must not exceed this. An appropriate safety factor must also be applied or considered based on the application and operating conditions. Taking into consideration the factors that limit the operation of a universal joint, speed x angle factor being the largest, a torque rating curve is to be used as a guideline and used with care when sizing a universal joint.

Torsional stiffness is an indicator of a material's resistance and rigidity per degree-change in its angle when twisted. The higher this number, the higher the torque load the component can carry.
